I have gained a strong foundation in hospitality through both my academic placement and part-time employment, allowing me to develop a wide range of practical and professional skills. I completed my industry placement at the Cavan Crystal Hotel, a four-star property known for weddings, conferences, and exceptional guest service. Throughout this placement, I worked closely with the events and banqueting team, supporting the preparation and delivery of weddings, conferences, and other functions. My responsibilities included setting up event spaces, assisting with room layouts, coordinating with different hotel departments, and interacting with guests to ensure their needs were met. This experience helped me understand the importance of organisation, communication, and the ability to adapt quickly in a busy and dynamic environment. Working in a professional hospitality setting improved my confidence and allowed me to develop strong customer service skills, as well as a deeper appreciation for the teamwork required to deliver high-quality events.
Alongside my placement, I gained additional experience working as a waitress at Meadowview in Cavan, where I provided high-quality customer service in a fast-paced setting. In this role, I was responsible for taking and serving orders, managing multiple tables, and handling transactions, all while ensuring guests felt welcomed and well looked after. Working closely with the kitchen and bar teams helped me develop strong communication skills and taught me how crucial teamwork is in maintaining smooth and efficient operations. This position strengthened my ability to multitask, stay calm under pressure, and deliver consistent service even during busy periods.
These combined experiences have played a significant role in shaping the skills and competencies I bring to the hospitality industry today. I have developed strong interpersonal and communication skills, allowing me to confidently engage with guests and colleagues. My time in both hotel and restaurant environments has also improved my organisational abilities, time management, and attention to detail. I have learned how to approach challenges with a solution-focused mindset and have grown more confident in taking initiative when needed. Through academic work such as organising The Atlantic Games, I have further developed leadership skills, creativity, and the ability to manage large-scale projects collaboratively.
